Daffodils in the Chimney Pot

Today, I noticed the beautiful daffodils within the chimney pot, at the junction of Maryhill Road and North Woodside Road. The chimney belonged to a former beer bottling plant in North Woodside Road.

This greenspace, where the chimney pot is located, has been enhanced as part of the Connecting Woodside Project. It is more open to the public as the fencing has been removed and it has been cleaned up.

Flood management at Wyndford Estate

Today, I went on a walk along the Kelvin Walkway to the Wyndford Estate. This is part of the West Highland Way and a cycle route to/from Milngavie.

The open spaces are designated public amenity greenspace and part of the green link between the Botanic Gardens and Dawsholm Park. Part of the estate acts as a flood plain and it is an area of wetland for at least 4 months of the year. The area is fenced off and described as soft ground.

Underneath this surface water, Scottish Water have constructed a Combined Sewer Overflow and associated pipework for the Wyndford Estate. This project has helped to improve the environment at the River Kelvin. It has prevented items which are mistakenly flushed down the toilet (baby wipes, plastic cotton buds) from overflowing in to the river.

There is potential to provide additional planting to support nature and wildlife habitats within the wetland area of the Wyndford Estate. The greenspaces could be enhanced for the wellbeing of the local community and promotion of nature conservation.

Demolition works progressing at Burnbank Gardens

In recent days, I visited Burnbank Gardens to observe the demolition works underway.

The site is being cleared

Tenants living in the area have been organising regular meetings and monthly clean ups. There is concern about road maintenance and cleansing services. There are daffodils and crocus in bloom within Burnbank Gardens. There is ongoing support for gardening activities.

Footpath changes during M8 Woodside Viaduct Works

Yesterday, I walked from St. Georges Cross in to the city centre via New City Road and the underpass at the Woodside Viaduct. There is a diversion for pedestrians and cyclists to follow.

A new footpath has been created to ensure that pedestrians and cyclists can use the underpass whilst the works are taking place.

Women and Girls Make Glasgow

Yesterday, I joined the International Women's Day March from Kelvingrove Park to George Square. This was organised by SWAG, which is a feminist platform at the University of Glasgow. Various protest banners were displayed on the march.

Believe Survivors, What About Her Future.

This year, the theme of International Womens Day is Embrace Equity. It is critical to understand the difference between equity and equality. To achieve inclusion and belonging require equitable action. We can all challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias and seek out inclusion.
