Artwork at Stockingfield Junction Bridge

In the last month, I have cycled to the Stockingfield Junction Bridge to enjoy views over Glasgow. Also, I found the sculpture and public art known as The Voice by Louise McVey, which is installed as a feature at the bridge.

You may be aware of other public art located across the Hillhead area by Louise McVey. Her creativity is very much appreciated.

Restoration of Cameron Memorial Fountain

Currently, the Cameron Memorial Fountain is surrounded by heras fencing. It is needing urgent repairs and maintenance to be retained as a significant historic landmark. It has tilted for over 100 years.

The memorial fountain was erected by public subscription in 1896.

It is constructed to commemorate the life of Sir Charles Cameron who was a newspaper editor, publisher, and a Glasgow MP for 21 years.

A fundraising effort is required to cover the costs of the restoration work and protect this memorial for future generations.

Abortion Access Saves Lives

Today, I met with protesters from Glasgow Students for Choice on Southpark Avenue. I gave my support to their protest outside the “Rethink Abortion Day” organised by March for Life UK, held at Turnbull Hall on the University of Glasgow campus on 13th May. I agree with the students that approval of such an event by the University is extremely concerning. There were various banners displayed at the protest.

Protect All Women & Mind Your Own Uterus

My Body, My Choice

Keep Your Rosaries Off My Ovaries

My Uterus My Choice, Abortion Access Saves Lives.

Never Again

Not the Church, Not the State, Women must decide their fate.

March for Life UK are known to have links to extreme organisations, and the event is being promoted by a Bishop who seems to support anti-abortion activists to protest and form picket lines in front of Queen Elizabeth University Hospital - protests that healthcare providers, hospital staff, and patients have reportedly found intimidating, unsettling, and harassing.

The leader of the organisation, was arrested for breaching buffer zones in England on purpose just last year. She is also involved with 40 Days For Life, which is the group behind the anti-abortion protests outside the QEUH in Glasgow.

Promoting anti-abortion stances is a violation of reproductive rights and bodily autonomy: human rights. The decision to carry a pregnancy to term is deeply personal and complex; it should be left to the individual to make, based on their own beliefs and circumstances.

There are serious concerns about the aims of the event, as well as its content and results. The language used by the organisers is very polarising and, while they talk about having meaningful discussions on abortion, in reality this has been translated into harassment and shaming.

It is considered that the University of Glasgow's campus cannot be a safe space free from misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and harassment in general if we allow such events to take place.

Allowing events organised by groups that advocate for bans on safe abortions, create stressful and uncomfortable environments for people that work or need to access healthcare at QEUH or Sandyford, and that ignore socio-economic issues, the right to choose, and the rights of people with an uterus to access reproductive healthcare and make informed decisions about their own body and future. Glasgow University students find this unacceptable and they demand that the University does better.

Access to the canal towpath at Applecross Basin

The Applecross Basin is a great place to spend time outdoors and enjoy views of the Forth and Clyde Canal.

In recent weeks, I have enjoyed walks at this section of the canal towpath and dropped in to the new community cafe at the Old Basin House on Applecross Street.

The restoration of the Old Basin House, which was built in 1790, for use by a social enterprise is very much welcomed.

Support for civic space at St. Georges Cross

In the last few weeks, I have enjoyed the blossom from the trees at St. Georges Cross. This is an important civic space with a statue of St. George and the Dragon at its centre.

The ongoing repair and maintenance of this community space is vital. This is needed to support civic pride and promote the area's local heritage.
