Top Up Tap at Botanic Gardens

Thanks to investment from Scottish Water, it is now possible to top up your water bottle using the water tap installed at Botanic Gardens.

Top Up Tap was launched on Friday 5th February 2021

Hopefully, this new tap will encourage people to choose to refill their water bottle and no longer purchase plastic bottles of water. 

Xmas Tree Recycling at Kelvin Way

Xmas Trees have been piling up at the recycling point on Kelvin Way, in the last few weeks. Thanks to everyone who has brought their Xmas Tree for recycling.

These trees are chipped, and left to decompose. This provides compost for Council to use in gardens and public spaces across Glasgow.

Demolition of Arnold Clark Showroom

The demolition of the Arnold Clark Showroom on St. Georges Road, at the corner of Grant Street has been completed, this month. Whilst I was walking along St. Georges Road, I witnessed the demolition work taking place.

This site is being cleared for a new private housing development involving 65 apartments. The size and scale of this new build will bring a significant change to the architectural appearance of this area.

Further progress on cycle lane at Garscube Road

This month, there has been significant progress on the installation of the segregated cycle lane on Garscube Road, at the junction with St. Georges Road and Possil Road.

The construction of the new cycle lane has continued during January 2021 with traffic management measures in place to maintain use of the junction for all. This is part of the Connecting Woodside Project.

The vital role of Woodside Health and Care Centre

This month, Woodside Health and Care Centre received the Glasgow Institute of Architects Design Award for Healthcare. This is in recognition of the quality of the building design. The new local facilities opened to patients on 1st July 2019.

In 2020, the dedication and hard work of everyone in involved in health and social care services has been vital. The investment in local facilities is very much appreciated.

Visit to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

I have been able to book a free visit to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in line with the Covid19 government guidelines. There are a wide range of objects and displays to enjoy using a one way system throughout the building.

It is possible to access the bike hire scheme for a visit and make use of Next Bike Hire Station nearby.

Overprovision of purpose built student accommodation

For most of this year, a new student accommodation tower block has been under construction on New City Road. It is dominating the local skyline due to its size and scale.

The new development has significantly disrupted the views of local heritage across the west end including the local church spires and University Tower. It is out of place alongside the nearby 4-storey flats and primary school. 

In the consultation on the new City Development Plan which closed on 11th December, I have highlighted that there should be no further development of any other purpose built student accommodation in the Hillhead Ward. The scale of these buildings is harmful to the residential amenity, and their designs are architecturally damaging to the local heritage.
